Paul Gerhardt Schnitker (* 12. January 1927 in Münster , Westphalia, † 27. February 2013 ) was a German entrepreneur , association official of the craft and politician ( CDU ; MEP ).

Life

Schnitker was born in Münster as the seventh child of the painter Gerhard Schnitker and graduated from high school in 1944. After serving in the war, he had to take over his father's painting business, as his chosen older brother had died at Stalingrad . In 1950 Schnitker passed the master's examination in painting and was the youngest master painter in Germany at the age of 23. In 1963 he also became a master glazier . He then studied at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, the subjects of Catholic theology , philosophy and economics . He was a member of the Catholic student association KStV Hansea-Halle Münster in the KV .

From 1968 Schnitker was involved both nationally and internationally in committees of the craft, from 1968 he was President of the Münster Chamber of Crafts until 2000 , from 1969 to 1992 Chairman of the West German Chamber of Crafts , and from January 1, 1973 to January 1, 1988 President of the Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH). As the first trade representative, he was chairman of the joint committee of the German commercial economy from 1979 to 1981. He was President of the International Federation of Crafts and the International Trade Union .

In 1971 he became a member of the CDU Münster. From 1979 to 1984 Schnitker was a member of the first European Parliament in Strasbourg and a member of its Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. He was the designer of the “Magna Charta for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises”.

Paul Schnitker was Honorary Consul of the Republic of France. He was a member of the Supervisory Board of Signal Insurance since 1972 , from 1987 to 1999 as its chairman.

Paul Schnitker Foundation

Schnitker is the namesake of the Paul Schnitker Foundation for the promotion of economy and education of craft and trade as well as the social market economy. The foundation was established in 1992 on his initiative by WGZ-Bank and what was then SIGNAL Insurance.

The foundation awards the Paul Schnitker Prize .
