Wittlage is a district of the Lower Saxon community Bad Essen in the district of Osnabrück in Lower Saxony .

Waters

The 325.3 km long Mittelland Canal runs north on the local border. The 189 km long Hunte flows through the local area of ​​Wittlage . It is passed under the Mittelland Canal at Wittlage Castle .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1075. For a long time the place was the seat of an office in the Osnabrück Monastery. At the beginning of the 17th century, the parishes of Essen, Lintorf, Ostercappeln, Barkhausen, Hunteburg and Venne belonged to the Wittlage office in Osnabrück.

The Wittlage watermill was first mentioned in a document in 1309. It is powered by the water of the Hunte and has been driving a shaft turbine since 1929. The electricity generated is used in the mill or fed into the local grid. Today there is an organic market in the Wittlager Mühle.

Wittlage was a municipality and the district capital of the then district Wittlage . On December 1, 1910, the place had 296 inhabitants. On July 1, 1972, Wittlage was incorporated into the Bad Essen community. On the same day, the Wittlage district was dissolved and incorporated into the Osnabrück district.
