Hermann Joseph Hartzheim (born January 11, 1694 in Cologne ; † January 17, 1767 there ) was a Roman Catholic priest and member of the Jesuit order . He taught as a professor of theology at Cologne University and headed the historic Dreikönigsgymnasium in Cologne for 25 years . As a historiographer , he made significant contributions to the history of the city and the Archdiocese of Cologne . His main works are the "Concilia Germaniae" based on Johann Friedrich Schannat , a five-volume collection of all synods and councils that have taken place on German soil , later supplemented by Anton Joseph Binterim and Heinrich Joseph Floß .

Life

Hermann Joseph Hartzheim comes from a respected family of lawyers in Cologne. His father, Conrad Ignatz Hartzheim (1649–1700), was born in Bad Münstereifel and worked as a lawyer , notary and councilor in Cologne. His mother, Gudula, came from the von Herresdorf family, a well-respected family of lawyers in Cologne.

Hartzheim joined the Jesuit order in 1712 after completing the Tricoronatum in Cologne. He completed his novitiate in Trier and further studies in Luxembourg . He studied theology in Milan from 1719 to 1722, teaching Greek and Hebrew there at the same time. In Cologne he taught as a professor of philosophy and theology at the university. In 1727 Hartzheim became sub- rain of the Dreikönigsgymnasium in Cologne, which he later headed from 1735 to 1759 as rain. Under his leadership, the school regained its old reputation. In the last years of his life, Hartzheim worked as a cathedral preacher at the High Cathedral in Cologne .

The " Eiflia illustrata ", the manuscript of the Fulda historian Johann Friedrich Schannat , who died in 1739 , which Hartzheim supplemented with extensive archive material and prepared for printing, had to remain unpublished during his lifetime. The work was completed and published in 1824 - 1857 by the Prüm District Administrator Georg Bärsch .

His "Historia gymnasii tricoronati", on the basis of which Joseph Kuckhoff wrote the history of the Gymnasium Tricoronatum in 1931 , also remained unpublished.
