The St. Nikolai Church in Bad Essen is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran. Parish of Bad Essen, which belongs to the Bramsche parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover .

The church was first built in the 14th century as a three-bay hall church with a just closed choir in the early Gothic style from quarry stone . The five-eighth closure that exists today was added in the second half of the 15th century, the west tower was built around 1491. From 1660 to 1662 the church was extended on the south side by a two-bay aisle .

In the yokes of the nave there is groin vault with shield arches and wall templates, buttresses on the outside . The choir and tower are equipped with ribbed vaults . The keystones in the choir show the coats of arms of the Bussche and Langen families .

The choir windows are pointed arch and tracery , the other windows have been rectangular since a renovation. There is an ogival door on the north side of the western yoke. The old sacristy is built to the north of the choir .

The upper part of the tower dates from the 17th century. The spire was replaced in 1705 after the old one was thrown down in a storm in 1703.

Interior

The altar and the pulpit , which were renovated in 1758, date from 1614 . The oldest piece is a gothic chalice made of gold-plated silver, another chalice is from the early 18th century. A chandelier made of brass bears the year 1602, a chandelier is from 1654. The baroque baptismal font made of white sandstone was built in 1735. Also to be found in the church several Renaissance - epitaphs from the 16th and 17th centuries, mainly for members of the Von dem Bussche family.
