The State Horticultural Show Villingen-Schwenningen 2010 was the 30th State Horticultural Show in Baden-Württemberg . It took place from May 12th to October 10th 2010 in the twin towns of Villingen-Schwenningen . The garden show was visited by 1.1 million people and closed with a surplus of 68,000 euros.

The city has been preparing for this event since September 2007. The created park landscape was advertised by the organizer as a "city (t) space for relaxation, play and fun".

Prehistory and structure of the garden exhibition site

The Neckar rises in the middle of the garden show grounds, in the Schwenninger Moos , and flows into the Rhine 367 kilometers further downstream in Mannheim .

Before the garden show, the Neckar had been running in a covered dole for decades ; the area in and around the old streambed that had been freed by the demolition had been built over more and more. In the last few years before the horticultural show, however, floods had occurred more and more often because the dole cross-section proved to be too narrow for the draining of the approaching water when there was heavy rainfall. The canal overflowed as a result of backwater and the water made its way towards its old bed, causing repeated damage in the now populated area.

The city looked for a remedy and planned the construction of the "Vorderen See" as well as a continuously open course of the Neckar in addition to the existing canal. It was not possible to flood the old bed for this purpose because it had meanwhile been used for other purposes in large areas. A largely new, open run had to be created, often on newly acquired areas. The greater part of the area acquired for this purpose was the site of the old freight station. The Neckarpark Garden Show Park was laid out on this industrial wasteland . Before that, however, the soil contaminated with substances from the former chemical trade and the watchmaking industry (especially solvents) had to be extensively rehabilitated, as there was a threat of poisoning the groundwater.

Initially, the project did not only meet with approval. In the run-up, there were strong discussions within the population of the city of Villingen-Schwenningen as to whether the state horticultural show should be held. Reasons for this were the high investments in the tight financial situation of the city as well as the - from Villingen's point of view - preference for the Schwenningen district.

"Nature connects" was the motto of the garden show. "Green is part of our quality of life", the organizers advertised for a visit to the flower festival on the Neckar. The 24 hectare site of the State Garden Show consists of three park areas: a landscape protection area , a classic old Möglingshöhe city park with a 295 meter long chestnut avenue with trees up to 25 meters high and the newly created garden show park .

Examples of themed and show gardens

The main part of the state horticultural show were the almost 30 themed and show gardens . The Südwestrundfunk reported repeatedly from its so-called "television garden" during the course of the exhibition.

Wellness garden lounge

The “green garden” with a barbecue area and whirlpool was framed by a two-meter-high wall. The limestone for it came from Istria . Small ornamental apple trees were part of the greenery. There was also a “wellness garden” in the smallest of spaces with an outdoor kitchen and swimming pond . The central part of the “wellness garden” was a 40 m² garden lounge with indoor and outdoor areas, which, according to the manufacturer, was equipped with a functioning sauna, fireplace and outdoor shower.

In the “Energy” themed garden, solar systems were installed on the walls and integrated into the green roof . The "Romantik" show garden offered opportunities for relaxation. Typically Chinese-Japanese was an exhibited bamboo garden. The regional association of gardening friends had put its model garden under the motto "Exotics on Black Forest Heights". Behind a gabion fence as wind protection and heat storage, for example, peppers, aubergines, artichokes and honeydew melons were found 700 m above sea level. NN successfully grown.

A Russian garden with steppe plants was decorated with a monogram of flowers. The word " Yasnaya Polyana " was reproduced in Cyrillic letters . This is the name of a country estate near Tula that is known for the fact that the poet Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy ( War and Peace ) was born here. In a rosarium on the Hubenloch , one of the highest rose gardens in Germany, the 80 new rose varieties from the last three years were presented. Limestone rocks, gravel and sandy humus formed the subsoil of a cactus garden with 500 plants. Drought-loving cacti thrived here, but also hardy cacti such as opuntia that can withstand up to 20 degrees below zero .

A special feature were the so-called "Neckar gardens", equipped with fitness equipment or designed for a picnic. Their planting was based on the intended use. 250 plants such as houseleek, bluebells, edelweiss, stonecrop and cinnabar grew on a dry stone wall and in a herb snail . In a Himalayan medicinal garden, the cultivation and use of medicinal plants were the overriding theme.

A circular route of 3.2 kilometers led past 60 exhibition areas. Stops on the circular route were a barefoot path with 20 different floor coverings, a walkable giant wood pile of the forest with information about the forest and Europe's largest mobile aquarium with 20 types of Neckar fish.

Events and projects (selection)

A view from the stage

1,500 events enriched the state horticultural show. The highlights were a national music festival and a national costume festival in July, an exhibition with life-size dinosaur models in July and August and an international meeting of organ barrel players in August. The Südwestrundfunk provided entertainment on 15 SWR4 radio days.

A German-French garden was designed by trainees in gardening and landscaping from Germany and France. They created a house garden with a small glass greenhouse in the center.

Summer flowers

The art contribution "Rose Project" dealt with the genus of roses.

The Ministry of the Environment provided information on planet earth and, with the subject of bionics, on technologies that have been imitated by nature. At the meeting point in Baden-Württemberg , ministries provided information about study opportunities, nature conservation, wild animals and drinking water and offered wine, cheese and milk seminars.

In the green meeting point , representatives of the gardening associations and fruit growing gave information. Knowledge of agricultural crops and 100 local foods, feed and renewable raw materials were conveyed in an agricultural labyrinth with 28 hairpin bends and eleven rings.

Sculpture at the source of the Neckar

Flowers and herbs from Provence and an exhibition on the subject of " Absinthe " were presented in two gardens by La Valette and Pontarlier (two twin towns in Villingen-Schwenningen).

An insect hotel and the adult education center's learning garden were a cooperation project between the Black Forest Association , BUND and NABU .

More than 200,000 spring and summer flowers and perennial plants were planted on the grounds of the State Horticultural Show, and eleven flower shows took place every two weeks. They were under topics such as "Symphony of Roses" or "Fairytale World in Flower Language".

Alarm clock in Möglingspark

Based on the clock tradition in Schwenningen, a pavilion of the five Christian churches in Baden and Württemberg was modeled on a clock mechanism. “Everything has its time” was the motto for the church contribution. Meditative walking in a labyrinth was also offered, as was the lighting of floating prayer candles. A huge cuckoo clock was installed in the so-called "bivouac box" on Möglingsee and an alarm clock measuring almost two meters in the neighboring flower garden.

The “green classroom” for experimentation, the largest marble run in Germany, a climbing garden over the Moosbach Gorge (five meters deep and 15 meters wide, probably the smallest in the country), puppet theater, a large play arena and a play island in the Neckar were specially designed for children designed.

Reuse

Large parts of the attractions and plants in the city park and in the newly created garden show park, such as the themed gardens, the gardens of the partner cities, the play arena and the play island, the sports equipment and the picnic corner will be retained even after the garden show has ended. A development association takes care of the operation and maintenance. An environmental center is to be set up in the building used as a state pavilion at the state horticultural show, the financing of which has not yet been clarified. The covered fairground with the catering building is available to clubs for their summer parties.

New apartments are to be built on the part of the garden show park facing the railway line. The part of the park in which the Neckar flows and the Neckar Cycle Path runs continues to serve as a recreational and sports area.

financing

The total cost of 28.9 million euros was financed as follows:

  • 8.5 million euros in revenue for the LGS company
  • 3.8 million euros in funding from the state
  • 2.0 million euros state grants for other projects (Neckar cycle path through LGS site, Neckar disclosure, grants from Bahn AG)
