As piles ( the piles , rare the piles ; regional also Polder ) or Holzpolter in which is forestry collected and sorted round timber referred to, which after harvesting ready is at a collection point for the removal, for example at the edge of forest roads .

etymology

The name has its origins in the rumbling noise that occurs when the wood is thrown on the pile. It therefore compiling a Polters also called rumble .

The pile is to be distinguished from the generic terms wood pile and pile of wood, the latter being particularly associated with firewood .

Sorting

In the course of the allocation of the felled round wood to the various (sales) assortments, referred to in forest language as holding, it is usually placed on separate piles on the pile area (wood storage area). Each pile should only contain wood of the same type (same tree species, uniform length, and if possible, uniform strength and quality). With a multilayer pile ( layer pile, pile pile), the trunks lie lengthways on top of one another. This procedure saves space and is mostly used for uniform mass assortments. In single-layer pile (driving pile), the logs are stored next to each other. This takes up a lot of space, but the logs are more accessible for surveying work and quality assessments. Pile numbers, which are usually attached to the front of the logs, are used to identify the piles that have arisen.

The trunks can be tortured in bark or without bark. Furthermore, a distinction is made between dry storage (mostly with ground clearance through sub-storage) and wet storage (for example with artificial irrigation, see wet storage ). To protect the wood harvest from the bark beetle and other forest pests , the piles can, where legal, be sprayed with insecticides such as chlorpyrifos .

Long wood is also sold or auctioned in Poltern . So the customer buys whole, limbed trunks. The amount of wood is given in solid cubic meters ; it must be estimated based on the volume of the pile. The buyer of the pile wood must take care of the removal and cutting to transportable pieces.
