Sebastian Polter (born April 1, 1991 in Wilhelmshaven ) is a German football player . He has been under contract with the Dutch first division club Fortuna Sittard since August 2020 . In addition, the striker was active for German youth national teams.
Career
societies
Polter began playing football as a goalkeeper for Heidmühler FC , a district club in Schortens . There he drew national attention and was appointed to the selection team of the Lower Saxony Football Association in 2002 . At the age of twelve he returned to his hometown, where he was discovered by the talent scouts of SV Werder Bremen and brought to their youth a year later. Although he was invited to the youth team of the DFB, he did not strive for a future as a goalkeeper, but wanted to prove himself as a striker. Since this was not possible for him in Bremen, he moved to SV Wilhelmshaven , where he was able to use this opportunity. In the first game he scored all five goals for his team; he scored a total of 69 hits in one year. He was again included in the Lower Saxony selection, with which he became German champion in 2006, and played for the U15 selection of the DFB. A year later he played for Eintracht Braunschweig , where he became a U16 national player and in March 2007 received the DFB award as “Talent of the Month”.
In 2007, Polter finally came to VfL Wolfsburg . In the first year he was actually still intended for the B youth team, but at the turn of the year he was promoted to the U19 age group as the youngest player. With the team he reached the final of the German A-Youth Championship, which was lost to SC Freiburg . In the following two years he was a permanent member of the U19 team and also played regularly in the U23 in the Regionalliga Nord . For the 2009/10 season Polter received a professional contract running until June 30, 2012, but without being used in the professional team that had become German champions the year before. A metatarsal fracture also contributed to this, which had put him out of action for a long time. In the following year, his first senior year, he continued to collect match practice in the U23. In 25 games he scored eleven goals and continued to approach the professional team. His contract period was extended to June 30, 2014 before the 2011/12 season .
On December 3, 2011, Polter was in the 18-man squad for a Bundesliga game for the first time, but was not used. He made his Bundesliga debut in the 4-1 defeat against SV Werder Bremen on December 10, 2011, when he came on after the half-time break. In total, he was used twelve times in his debut year as a professional. For the 2012/13 season he switched to 1. FC Nürnberg on loan for a year in order to get regular match practice in the Bundesliga. In the summer break of 2013 he went to 1. FSV Mainz 05 . On 30 August 2014 he was to the end of the season 2014/15 in the 2. Bundesliga at 1. FC Union Berlin on loan. For the 2015/16 season , Polter was signed by the English second division side Queens Park Rangers , for whom he scored ten goals in 51 games.
On January 10, 2017, Polter rejoined 1. FC Union Berlin, this time receiving a contract dated June 30, 2020. In his first season the striker was a regular player and was able to contribute twelve goals and four assists in 26 competitive games; from March 2018 he was out until September due to an Achilles tendon tear. After his return, Polter scored the goal of the 2-0 final score with an overhead kick on the 7th matchday in the win against Holstein Kiel . This hit was voted Goal of the Month for September 2018. At the end of the 2018/19 season , he and the team were promoted to the Bundesliga after a relegation success via VfB Stuttgart . In the top German league, the attacker was no longer used regularly, as head coach Urs Fischer often relied on Sebastian Andersson . By the end of May Polter had thirteen Bundesliga games (two goals and assists each) before he was suspended. The reason for this was "unsolidarity" on the part of the player in view of the COVID-19 pandemic . His contract, which expired in summer 2020, was therefore no longer extended by the club and Polter is only allowed to participate in team training.
For the 2020/21 season , Polter signed a two-year contract with the Dutch first division club Fortuna Sittard .
National team
Polter was discovered for the national junior selection of the DFB and played for the U15 and U16 national teams . After that, however, it was not until the U18 national team that he was called up again. There he scored three goals in six international matches. In February 2012 he made his debut in the U20 national team in a friendly against Italy, which was lost 4-3 and in which he scored two goals . In August 2012, he made his debut in the U21 national team in a 6-1 win against the national team of Argentina. With the DFB selection, he qualified for the 2013 European Championship .
