New Castle (Giessen)
The New Palace is located on Brandplatz in the center of the Hessian university town of Giessen . Directly to the east is the Giessen armory , a few meters to the south-west are the botanical gardens and the old castle .
history
The castle was built from 1533 to 1539 by Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous . Architecturally, the building in natural stone and half-timbered mixed construction represents the transition phase from the Gothic hall and hall building to the Renaissance castle. Because of its size (34.5 × 12 × 19.5 m) it is one of the most important half-timbered buildings in Hesse.
After 1650 the building housed the university chancellery and a court. It was extensively restored from 1899 to 1907. The castle miraculously remained undamaged during the Second World War (the armory and the old castle right next to it were destroyed). From 1946 to 1963, the Giessen Polytechnic , later the Giessen State Engineering School , was housed in the rooms of the palace and in the barracks in the courtyard and in those behind the armory . Since 1965 it has been the location of the Institute for Geography at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .
