Ellhaus Castle

The castle Ellhaus even castle Milchling or Edelhaus called, is a moated castle on the left bank of the Lumda in Staufenberger district Treis an der Lumda in the district of Giessen in Hesse .

location

The castle is located exactly opposite the Treis Castle , the remains of which are on the other side, the northern bank of the Lumda.

history

Exact information on the foundation of the castle is not available. In terms of architectural history, it can be assumed that the lords of Schutzbar called Milchling had the castle built in the 13th or 14th century as a quadrangular late Gothic residential tower . The "old floor" called the residential tower is provided with around 1.8 meters thick walls. Of the two protective bar called Milchling, which were divided into an older and a younger line around 1403, the older and arguably richer line expanded the castle around 1679 to include the “New Stock” (also called “Burg am Wasser”). In between the old part of the castle was probably in ruins again. A Ganerbenschaft (castle division) to be brokered between the brothers Caspar and Hans Schutzbar called Milchling in 1584 is described by the Landgrave Hessian official as follows:

" Burgksitz, but which has fallen into disrepair and nothing more is left of it, then a mere block of wall, in the Längde ongevehr 60, in the breyde 38 holding shoes, located, with a square place around it, ongevehr in the 30 schuch less or more, as well as in a moat, almost 30 Schuch are dug up, in the same Burgksiz belong the forecourt or courtyard, and on top of it are built schuren and stel. There was also a garden like those who had been killed by a ditch and were surrounded by the walled wall that was soaked with the moat. "

- quoted from Michael Losse: Elhaus Castle in Treis an der Lumda: City of Staufenberg, District of Gießen, State of Hesse , p. 105

After the residential tower had been in ruins for a long time , it came into private ownership and was restored.
