description

The castle was probably built in the first half of the 12th century to protect the surrounding villages and was subordinate to a knight Manegold von Hagen, who was murdered together with his son in 1148. It is unclear whether the inheritance went to Manegold's wife Imecha or to his daughter Aurelia. Aurelia is said to have been persuaded by her uncle to go to a monastery, which was the reason to build a monastery on the castle, whereupon she brought her inheritance as a dowry when she entered the monastery . Between 1134 and 1148 which was Prämonstratenser - Monastery Wirberg , composed of Prämonstratensers Otto von Cappenberg , who until his death in 1171 provost of the monastery Cappenberg was a so-called double monastery founded. After the complex was partially destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and the tower of the monastery church collapsed in 1716, today's church on the Wirberg was built on the site of the ruins from 1753 to 1754 . Small remains of the walls of the former castle and monastery are still preserved.
