Nordeck Castle

The castle Nordeck is a hilltop castle in Nordeck , a district of Allendorf on the Lumda in the district of Giessen in Hesse . The castle, which was documented as early as the 12th century, still shapes the image of Nordeck today. It changed hands frequently, is now owned by the Counts of Schwerin zu Friedelhausen and has housed the Burg Nordeck school home since 1925 . Lebenshilfe Gießen has been running a dormitory at the castle since 2015 . The keep can be visited by appointment.

history

The actual age of the castle can be deduced from the dimensions of its chapel, as there are no documents about its construction phase: the "Roman foot" on which its dimensions are based was used until the 11th century. During this time, the Nordeck castle chapel with the main structure of the castle was built from basalt and lung stone.

The first documented reference to a lord of the castle is from a later time and mentions an Adolf von Nordeck in 1222. Nordeck an der Lumda is mentioned as a settlement as early as 1093. The village presupposes the castle, so the construction before 1100 can be assumed to be safe. Initially laid out as the headquarters of the von Nordeck family , the castle had been the property of the Landgraves of Hesse since the 13th century. It once acted as an important barrier on the road from Mainz to Amöneburg .

In 1328, Hermann the Elder (* after 1305; † between 1368 and 1370), the youngest son of Landgrave Otto I , after his eldest brother Heinrich II (* before 1302; † 1376) came to power in the Landgraviate of Hesse Nordeck Castle as a Paragium .

In 1906 the von Nordeck zur Rabenau family bought the facility back; Like Schloss Friedelhausen , Hofgut Appenborn and Oberburg Rabenau , it then fell to the Counts of Schwerin , to whom it still belongs.
