Hermann I of Hesse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann I, "the elder", of Hesse (* after 1305; † between 1368 and 1370) was the fourth and youngest son of Landgrave Otto I of Hesse and his wife Adelheid von Ravensberg († 1335/39), daughter of Otto III. from Ravensberg .

After his eldest brother Heinrich II (* before 1302; † 1376) came to power in the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1328, Hermann received Nordeck Castle northeast of Gießen as Paragium , and in 1349 Grebenstein Castle near Kassel , which his brother Ludwig (* 1305; † around 1345) as a Paragium. Pope John XXII. had promised him an ecclesiastical benefice in 1326, when Landgrave Otto I was paying his respects in Avignon with his wife and large entourage , but Hermann renounced his ecclesiastical career and was satisfied with his rule in Nordeck. Even when his nephew Otto der Schütz died prematurely in 1366, he made no claims to the Landgraviate of Hesse. In a document from July 31, 1368 he is mentioned as living, another document from July 12, 1370 referred to him as "Seyligin" (blessed, ie he was dead). Another document issued on October 1, 1370 by Landgrave Heinrich II and his nephew Hermann II , in which they order the unification of the old and new towns of Grebenstein under a council, is Hermann the Elder also as "blessed", that is already deceased, designated.

Nothing is known of a marriage and descendants of Hermann.

The fourth brother, Otto (* 1301; † 1361), was Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1331 . The only sister, Elisabeth († after 1354), married Duke Rudolf II of Saxony-Wittenberg .
