Eckhart G. Franz

Eckhart Götz Franz (born December 24, 1931 in Marburg ; † March 16, 2015 in Darmstadt ) was a German archivist and historian . He was head of the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt until 1996 and chairman of the Association of German archivists from 1977 to 1985 .

Life

Eckhart G. Franz was a son of the historian Günther Franz (1902-1992) and brother of the theologian and Trier chief library director Gunther Franz (born February 2, 1942 in Strasbourg in Alsace). He studied history, English and American studies in Heidelberg , Freiburg , Cologne and Portland , Oregon (USA). In 1956 he received his doctorate with a thesis The American image of the German Revolution of 1848/49 . After completing his doctorate, he completed the archival preparatory service at the archive school in Marburg from 1957 to 1959 as an archive trainee for the State of Hesse . From 1959 to 1971 he worked as an archive assessor at the Marburg State Archives . During this time he worked as a guest in Tanzania in 1967 and 1969 in order to record and catalog files from the German colonial era in the local national archive. In 1971 he moved to the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt and took over the management there. He has been retired since 1996.

From 1962 to 1992 he was a part-time lecturer at the Marburg Archive School. From 1977 to 1985 he was honorary chairman of the professional association for archives, the Association of German Archivists . Since 1965 he was a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse (since 2009 honorary member), since 1971 a member of the Hessian Historical Commission in Darmstadt . From 1973 to 2002 he was chairman of the Historical Association for Hesse .

Franz died after a short illness in March 2015. He was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: IE 32).
