The Castle Treis , also castle on the water called, was a castle-like fortified farm on the right bank of the Lumda in Staufenberger district Treis an der Lumda in the district of Giessen in Hesse .

Geographical location

The remains of the castle are in Hauptstrasse 46, opposite Ellhaus Castle on the northern side of the Lumda.

description

Almost nothing is known about the history of the castle. Presumably it was built in the middle of the 16th century by the older line of the gentlemen Schutzbar called Milchling .

In the 19th century, an office building was built on the site of the former residential building , which until 1867 served as the official residence of the Hessian justice office in Treis .

The 1.1 meter thick circular walls along the Lumda and, integrated into a house, a tower with bay windows and corbels on the west side and a mighty round tower on the south side , also known as the “thief tower”, testify to the formerly strongly fortified castle complex. The facility is privately owned.
