Bürgerspitalkirche hl. Martin in Zwettl

The Roman Catholic St. Martin Citizens Hospital Church in the Lower Austrian town of Zwettl is located on the corner of Schulgasse and Klostergasse. The Gothic building from the years 1438–1448 is surrounded by a wall together with the civic hospital building behind it. It is the successor to an older St. Martin's Chapel, which was destroyed during the Hussite siege in 1427. The church belongs to the Zwettl parish and is a listed building . The St. Martin senior citizens' center is now located in the hospital building and is operated by the Zwettler Civic Foundation, which has existed since 1295.

Exterior

The nave is simple and has a steep gable roof. The church is accessible through a late Gothic pointed arch portal on the west side. The facade on the portal side has a relief Adoration of the Sacrament from 1508. The recessed, low choir has a quintuple closure , buttresses and water hammer. Late Gothic pointed arched windows with neo-Gothic tracery can be seen on the choir and nave. The eight-sided choir tower has Gothic three-pass windows and is crowned by a pyramid helmet.

Interior

The originally flat-roofed nave was converted into a three-aisled, four-bay hall in 1603 and vaulted. Its groin vault with gothic stucco ribs rests on eight-sided pillars with combatant capitals. A three-arched late Gothic organ gallery with cross-ribbed vaults rises below it on eight-sided pillars . The triumphal arch is ogival. The late Gothic choir has a single bay. It has a five-eighth closure, a ribbed vault with round services and a surrounding coffee cornice . Other features include a late Gothic, square session niche. A late Gothic, barbed portal with a studded wrought iron door leads to the barrel vaulted sacristy.

Facility

The early Baroque high altar with cartilage decoration dates from 1678. The Holy Trinity is depicted on the altarpiece. The upper picture, a work of the 19th century, shows St. Martin. The side figures represent the Hll. Martin and Georg. These were created around 1525. On the top there are angel figures from the end of the 17th century. Further fittings include an organ with a case from 1842, a baroque crucifix from around 1700, the former side altarpiece Adoration of the Magi from the second half of the 17th century and the choir stalls and the vestry cupboard from the same period. The church has several items in safekeeping. These include a late Gothic Madonna figure from around 1525/1530 and a Gothic panel painting from 1467 with minuscule inscription and donor figures.
