Lahn window

The Lahn window Hessen is a water information center on the Lahn in Gießen operated by the regional council (RP) Gießen . The partly underground building offers glimpses of the river through large glass panes, but also of the fish pass at Klinkel's mill . With a little patience, visitors can watch fish and other animal species as they pass the mill ditch on their hikes to spawning grounds and food sources. As an environmental educational place of learning outside of school , but also for families, interested groups or individual visitors, the Lahn window, popular with the public, shows the diversity of residents in local waters. The structure is unique in Hessen and was planned based on models in Aquitaine in southwest France.

history

In order to restore the accessibility of the Lahn am Wehr at the Klinkel'schen Mühle, under which there is a hydropower plant , a fish pass was put into operation in 2007 by the city of Gießen as the owner of the weir system. With their help, migratory fish species such as perch , gudgeon , chub , brown trout , roach , barbel and other species can overcome the 2.30 meter difference in height, which was previously not possible without fish ascent. At the upper confluence of the fish pass into the Lahn, the Upper Fisheries Authority had an underground 16 square meter room with windows built at the RP Gießen, which was accessible via a staircase with free entry.

In the first year the offer was taken up by more than 2800 visitors, by May 2009 by 4700 visitors, after five years 20,000 visitors (4000 of them in school classes) had come. The room turned out to be too small for visiting (school) groups.

The extension and renovation of the Lahn window took place on the occasion of the preparations for the Gießen State Horticultural Show in 2014 and began with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on November 7, 2013. Since the construction work had to be carried out in the dry, the fish ladder was out of order during the construction phase, which was criticized by local anglers. During this phase, the water level of the Lahn had to be lowered by around one meter for the construction work. At the same time, the city of Gießen had the previous pedestrian staircase to the bridge over the weir converted into a ramp so that the Lahn window is barrier-free for visitors from both sides of the river.

Current status

The new building, which cost more than 840,000 euros, was opened on June 9, 2014 after a construction period of seven months. After the renovation, the underground space is now around 40 square meters and contains three square meters of special glass panes both in the direction of the Fischwanderweg and directly into the Lahn. Here, among other things, fish can also be observed in a shallow water zone. A viewing platform and a pavilion , which offers an exhibition and training room , were newly built on the basement . The measure was financed by funds from the wastewater tax. After reopening, the information center was visited by 38,000 people within three months.

The nature conservation department of the regional council will in future evaluate the best images from the recordings of three webcams and publish them on a YouTube channel or the RP's Facebook page. The aim of the measure is to convey to the public on the one hand water management and on the other hand the objectives of the European Water Framework Directive .
