The Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) is the regional utility of the city of Giessen and the region of Central Hesse. The municipal utilities supply the region with electricity, natural gas and heat and supply drinking water to various cities and communities. They are also the concession holder of the city bus routes in Giessen. The operational bus traffic is handled by the subsidiary MIT.BUS GmbH. Another branch of the SWG are the baths.

history

In 1830 the first urban water pumping began with 350 meters of pipeline. In 1855 the "Giessen gas lighting contract" was concluded. The gasworks went into operation a year later. In 1887 the city's gas and water works were founded. In 1894 the first public transport in Gießen was opened with "horse-drawn buses" between the train station and Grünberger Straße. In 1898 the "Gießener Volksbad" was inaugurated. In 1901 the power station goes into operation. The electricity was produced with hydropower. In 1909 the electric tram ran on the first two lines.

In 1938, by merging four companies, the Stadtwerke Gießen was founded as an in-house operation of the city. In 1953 the Gießen gas factory was closed. The connection to the long-distance gas network of Ruhrgas AG followed .

In the same year the tram also ceased operations. Trolleybuses took over the regular service. In 1957 the four trolleybus lines were converted to diesel operation. In 1967 the municipal utilities switched from town gas to natural gas.

In 1994 the info center was opened on the market square. In 2002, the municipal utilities changed their legal form from municipal operation to a stock corporation. The city of Giessen is the sole shareholder. In 2003 the public utilities bought the Pfeiffer transport company. In May 2012, the redesigned customer center on Gießen market square was reopened after 15 months of renovation.
