The State Garden Show 2000 (LGS 2000) was a Bavarian State Garden Show in Memmingen in the administrative region of Swabia . It took place from April 28 to October 8, 2000 on a former fallow land that was converted into a local recreation area. With over 1.3 million visitors and a profit in the final balance, the State Garden Show 2000 is one of the most successful State Garden Shows.

canditature

A concept for the application to host a state horticultural show in the 1980s had no prospect of success and was rejected again. At the beginning of the 1990s a new plan was worked out and in 1991 the city was awarded the contract to host the State Garden Show 2000. The concept provided for an area on the Memminger Ach that had been used as a recreational area until 1930 to be re-opened as such. The sewage treatment plant was located on the site in the 1950s. After the Heimertingen waste water association was founded and the sewage treatment plant was outsourced, the site was subjected to various uses, for example as a building yard and compost area. Of the two former sewage ponds , only the Stetterweiher, named after the Stetter company that was located there , was open to the public and served as a fishing pond and for fishing. The garden show concept envisaged converting the polluted areas into an inner-city green area. The roads running through the site, the A 96 and the Mittlerer Ring turned out to be problematic. With the old trees, the water areas of the old sewage ponds, the Memminger Aach and the biotopes , however, there was an opportunity for sustainable improvement.

Planning and costs

The planning began in 1995 with an urban and landscape planning ideas competition. The evaluation took place in the summer of 1996. The first prize went to the landscape architects Andrea Gebhard, Johannes Mahl-Gebhard, Helmut Wartner and the architects Bernhard Landbrecht and Christian Stadler. They were charged with planning and coordinating the project.

Work began in spring 1998. The scheduled date for the opening, April 28, 2000, was kept. A total of 17,792,956 euros was spent on the LGS. Of this, the construction work was the largest item at 8,231,799 euros. The planning cost 1,482,746 euros and took second place.

Objectives

The main goals were to open up the previously unused area for the population and to create a city park that could continue to be used by the population after the LGS. One of the main goals was to create an inner-city green corridor. Furthermore, the passability for pedestrians and cyclists had to be guaranteed. The townscape and nature were in the foreground alongside the recreational value and the quality of living.

concept

Wooden artwork

The state show concept envisaged establishing connections between old and new, nature and culture, emotions and the rational, space and intimacy. Above all, it should create an attractive living environment for people. The western part of the exhibition was designed as a nature exhibition, the east on the motorway should be reserved for culture for exhibitions and events. The concept also envisaged creating a space for trade fairs, circuses and festival tents on the site after the state horticultural show in the east.

The art and color concept provided for the following: “... in connection with technical structures, wall panels mark the beginning and end of axes and rooms. All works of art and fixtures, but also the planting with the different flower pictures are based on an overall color concept .... "

Another point was the traffic calming in the entire area of the state horticultural show. The Colmarer Straße, which runs on the western part of the LGS site, was renovated and designated as a 30-kilometer zone. The direct access from Colmarer Straße to the Mittlerer Ring has been blocked. Since then, Colmarer Strasse has been continued with Hemmerlestrasse, which leads to the east. Likewise, the Saarlandstrasse, "which should lead the guest from the old town to the state garden show", was redesigned. New trees, bushes and perennials were planted there to delimit the parking lot, the old trees were largely preserved. The eastern part of the State Garden Show was not particularly affected by traffic due to the low level of residential development. Only the part of the New World Street leading past the fairgrounds was redesigned and adapted to the needs of such a major event. In the process, exhibitor parking spaces were created under the motorway, which are now available to those seeking relaxation.

Instead of creating special allotment garden settlements for the LGS, as is usual, the existing allotment garden settlement in the east of the LGS in Memmingen was included and an agreement was reached with the tenants regarding the opening of the gardens. The former sewage ponds were redesigned and integrated into the elongated area of the eastern part. One side was made close to nature, the other in concrete. A floating stage was built between the two ponds, which are connected by a small passage. A grave exhibition with modern graves and old-looking grave monuments was created on the north side of the western part.

Implementation of the concept

The concept of the state horticultural show was completely implemented. It was opened on April 28, 2000 by the then Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber and some cabinet members. Prominent sponsors could be won for various smaller attractions in the LGS. Rudolph Moshammer fulfilled his childhood dream of a pleasure labyrinth at LGS. It consisted of thuja plants and had various resting poles in the dead ends, which were decorated with flowers and provided with baroque benches.

Structure of the LGS

The western part of the state horticultural show was characterized by natural flower beds and the floodplain landscape of the Memminger Aach. Cottage gardens and native flowers, shrubs and trees set the main emphasis in this part of the LGS. An old mill and its ancillary building were integrated, thus gaining additional exhibition space. The floodplains of the Aach were used as a nature trail. The Mittlerer Ring , one of the busiest streets in the city, was bypassed by an underpass with a small watercourse to the eastern part of the State Garden Show.

Events

Around 2000 events took place during the state horticultural show. Associations from the city, the surrounding area and from further afield presented themselves and their activities. Landscape gardeners and architects had their own event spaces. A floating stage was set up between the autobahn and the former Stetterweiher for artistic performances.

LGS budget

The state horticultural show generated a loss of 6,903,539 euros, but this was offset by various positive effects. Up to 197 people could be employed during the state horticultural show, around 160 jobs were created in the direct vicinity of the LGS. Overall, it can be assumed that the state horticultural show will bring economic benefits of 36,000,000 euros, so that LGS achieved a plus of 2.2 million euros compared to the estimated minus of 1.9 million euros.
