Hain City Park (Bamberg)
The Stadtpark Hain is an extensive park in the south of the city of Bamberg between the right ( Main-Danube Canal ) and left arm of the Regnitz . It consists of Theresienhain, north of Munich Ring, and Luisenhain, south of it.
history
In the Middle Ages, today's city park was still an alluvial forest between the two banks of the Regnitz.
In 1803 it was converted into a landscape park by Stephan Freiherr von Stengel at the request of the Bavarian King Maximilian I. Joseph based on the model of the English Garden in Munich and equipped with pavilions, monuments and temples. ETA Hoffmann was already walking in the grove and, according to his own words, there met the talking dog Berganza ; a memorial by the academic sculptor Hermann Leitherer has been a reminder of this encounter since 1968.
There are remains of the old Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal from the 19th century, the northern end of which was Bamberg.
In 2001 the grove was designated as a European protected area.
Botanical Garden
The botanical garden of the city of Bamberg is located in the grove . It was laid out in 1906 as a school garden for Bamberg high schools. It consists of four perennial quadrants. At its northern end is the so-called Metznerhäuschen, which has been renovated in the meantime.
