The Bavarian Library Association (BVB) is a library association to which more than 135 predominantly academic libraries from Bavaria belong.

The service and competence center is the BVB-Verbundzentrale, a department of the Bavarian State Library , with around 40 employees. The network headquarters is located at the Bavarian State Library in Munich . In addition to the central network database / library network Bavaria, it looks after the Internet portal Gateway Bayern , the dynamic link resolver SFX, the BVB essay database, online interlibrary loan, the shared CD-ROM server and the DigiTool multimedia system.

Members

150 libraries are connected to the network, including the Bavarian State Library , 11 university libraries, 17 university libraries and 10 regional state libraries. There is no official date of foundation; it started in the offline network in 1970 and in the online network in 1987.

The union catalog contains over 18 million bibliographic data with over 35 million proof of ownership. As part of the catalog enrichment, tables of contents, summaries and blurbs are offered.

The Internet portal Gateway Bayern enables research in the heterogeneous and diverse offers of the BVB and represents the central entry point for literature seekers to the services of the Virtual Library Bavaria. The result of a research ideally includes not only the titles of books and journals, but also of essays and metadata for digital objects such as full texts, videos, images and more.

The BVB's database of articles is used to research journals, the contents of which are usually not included in library catalogs. It contains more than 46 million titles from around 21,000 journals with a focus on current scientific literature.

With online interlibrary loan, interlibrary loan for both monographs and documents has been accelerated from several weeks to a few days. The shared CD-ROM server, which is also administered in the network headquarters, enables the BVB libraries to provide their respective users with a large number of different databases in an economical form.

The DigiTool multimedia system is the common platform of the Bavarian network libraries for the management and presentation of digital documents and collections.
