The University Library of Passau is a central service facility of the University of Passau , one of the young universities in Germany . Its main task is to provide literature and information to scientists and students at the university, to impart information skills and to support the publication of scientific papers. In addition, it is open to citizens, authorities and companies from the city and region. Use is free of charge. With 2.0 million volumes, it is one of the largest libraries in Bavaria . The library is also a member of the Bavarian Library Association .
construction
The library is a single tier library system . It consists of a central library and four branch libraries. The branch libraries are located in the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics, where the required research and study literature for the respective subject can be found. The central library and its branch libraries form an organizational unit with central management, despite the spatial separation. Media acquisition and processing takes place in the central library.
Duration
The book and media inventory comprises around 2.0 million volumes as well as around 13,300 journals and journal-type series in printed form, around 1,800 of which are ongoing journal subscriptions. The holdings are systematically structured and arranged according to subject areas, mostly freely accessible in 5 reading rooms. In addition, part of the inventory is stored in magazines. In addition to printed books and magazines, the library also offers a wide range of electronic media: The library has licensed around 260 databases for the university network. In addition, around 1,200 databases are freely available on the Internet. In addition to the more than 56,000 journals that are freely accessible on the Internet, around 41,000 paid titles are activated for the Passau university network. In addition, the University Library of Passau provides specialist literature in the form of e-books licensed for the university network and freely accessible. A total of around 225,000 e-books are accessible.
The Passau State Library and the University Library form a catalog and lending network, so that the State Library's holdings with 320,000 volumes and 400 current journal titles can be accessed.
Collections
Media from the fields of law, economics, mathematics and computer science, theology, linguistics and literary studies, humanities, Southeast Asian studies, art, music, communication, education, sports and folklore are collected. A specialty is the cricket literature collection.
The holdings of the Oberhausmuseum Passau were recorded by the university library and placed in its rooms. In addition, the University Library of Passau looks after the holdings of the Institute for Cultural Area Research in Eastern Bavaria and the neighboring regions (IKON), which are housed in the State Library.
history
When the university began its studies in the 1978/79 winter semester, the university library opened its doors after a year and a half of preparation. In the autumn of 1986 the administration, the general reading room and a large part of the humanities holdings were moved to the newly built building of the central library in a central location at Innstrasse 29 acquired magazine in Karlsbader Strasse. The other branch libraries are located in the individual faculty buildings. The holdings of the former Philosophical-Theological University of Passau were incorporated.
