Beattock is a town in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located around three kilometers southwest of Moffat and 29 kilometers northeast of Dumfries on the right bank of the Evan Water .

history

Various forts in the area document the great strategic importance of the region around Beattock between the Iron Age and the Middle Ages . In the 16th century the Tower House Lochhouse Tower was built on a knoll outside Beattock . In 1991 Beattock had 500 inhabitants.

traffic

The A701 (Dumfries - Edinburgh ) touches Beattock and connects the town to the trunk road network. The A74 runs directly to the east, and this section has been upgraded to the A74 (M) motorway.

The village was on the road from Glasgow to Carlisle established in the 1820s . The climb north of Beattock was notorious and caused problems for wagon traffic to the north. In Beattock, the Old Brig Inn was set up as an inn with a hostel and horse changing station along the route.

With the construction of the main line of the Caledonian Railway to Carlisle in 1847 Beattock got its own station. The Old Brig Inn subsequently lost its importance. The station on what is now the West Coast Main Line was closed in 1972, and efforts are being made to reopen it for passenger services.
