The Old Brig Inn

The Old Brig Inn is a former hotel in the Scottish town of Beattock in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1988.

history

In order to provide a walkway station along the newly built Glasgow - Carlisle road , the Scottish Government received a request to provide £ 1,800-2,000. The building was built in 1821 to a design by the engineer Thomas Telford . The total cost of around £ 4,500 was partly raised by public funds. It served as a restaurant and hotel as well as a horse changing station. With the construction of the main line of the Caledonian Railway to Carlisle in the late 1840s, the Old Brig Inn lost its importance. After operations had to be stopped, the building was used as a farmhouse. Later a restaurant was set up.

description

The former hotel is isolated on the northern edge of Beattock. It is separated from the village by the Evan Water . Today it is off the A701 , which at a roundabout takes up the exits of the parallel A74 (M) .

The east-facing front of the two-story hotel is five axes wide. At the central entrance area, two Tuscan columns support a final beam . A blind triplet window is let in above it . Just like the window openings, the building edges are set off in color by stone blocks. The other windows are twelve-part lattice windows . Belt cornices and a cornice structure the facades horizontally. The three-axis-wide side facades are designed with triple windows in the middle. The building closes with a slate-covered platform roof with eye-catching chimneys.

The masonry of the two-story stables is made of quarry stone with natural stone surrounds . On the north side there is a wide doorway with a pressed segment arch . Remises for teams are also housed in the buildings. The final roofs are covered with slate.
