Modestus († before 772 probably in Maria Saal ) was a holy mission bishop in Carinthia .

Life

Modestus probably came from Ireland . At the request of the Slav Duke Cheitumar, Virgilius von Salzburg sent him around 757 together with several priests as a missionary to Carantania . Modestus was a choir bishop (episcopus missus), a bishop who was dependent on Salzburg and had no diocese of his own. He built a Marienkirche, probably a predecessor of that Marienkirche of Maria Saal , opposite the Karnburg near the Roman city Virunum . From here he worked all over the country, teaching, preaching the gospel and ordaining priests. According to the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum ( "... ecclesiam Sanctae Mariae et aliam Liburnia civitate, seu ad Undrimas et in aliis plurimis locis ..." ), he built and consecrated churches in St. Peter im Holz (the former Roman Episcopal town Teurnia ), and in the Styrian Ingeringtal (ad Undrimas). This last church is believed to be in Ingering near Knittelfeld or in Fohnsdorf .

His (alleged) remains are venerated in Maria Saal. The mission of the Karantans, which was briefly interrupted after the death of Modestus, was continued from 772 with further choir bishops and mission priests.
