Georg Scheibelreiter

Georg Scheibelreiter (born February 3, 1943 in Vienna ) is an Austrian historian and heraldist .

Life

Georg Scheibelreiter began a double degree at the University of Vienna after graduating in 1961 : He studied law and completed it in 1967 with a Mag. Iur. as well as the subjects history and art history, in which he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate. From 1971 to 1974 he completed the training course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (IÖG) to deepen his knowledge of the auxiliary historical sciences of the Middle Ages and modern times. At the same time he worked from 1970 to 1980 on the “ Tabula Imperii Byzantini ” project of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, and from 1972 to 1980 also as a university assistant at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research under Heinrich Fichtenau . In 1973 Scheibelreiter received a research grant for the Archives nationales in Paris.

In 1980 Scheibelreiter received his habilitation at the Humanities Faculty of the University of Vienna under Heinrich Fichtenau and Herwig Wolfram for the subjects of "Medieval History and Historical Auxiliary Sciences" and was in the following years as a university lecturer at the University of Vienna and as a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck (1981 and 1994 ), the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (USA) (1986) and the University of Klagenfurt (1988/89). In addition, since 1983 he has been the editor in charge of the communications of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (MIÖG). From 1997 onwards he worked as an associate professor at the University of Vienna. In 2008 he retired.

The focus of Georg Scheibelreiter's work includes the early Middle Ages and its history of mentality , hagiography , the historical auxiliary sciences of heraldry , genealogy and sphragistics and, in connection with this, the animal, but also the mythical creatures in the Middle Ages.

Scheibelreiter is active in various voluntary functions not only in his research areas, so since 1990 as head of the section "Heraldry, Genealogy and Prosopography" at the Austrian Historians' Day, since 1993 as a board member of the heraldic-genealogical society "Adler" in Vienna and since 2002 as a board member the Erika Mitterer Society .

In 1984 Scheibelreiter received the advancement award of the Cardinal Innitzer Foundation , in 1990 the award of the Adolf Schärf Foundation of the City of Vienna. In addition, he has received honors from various international organizations, such as Fellow of the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota (1987), Socio onorario dell 'Istituto del Sacro Romano Impero in Florence (1989), as Académicien of the Académie Internationale d 'Héraldique in Paris (1999) and as an honorary member of the HEROLD.
