Cheitumar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cheitumar († 769) was a prince of the Slavic Carantans (751–769) in what is now Carinthia and Slovenia . He was the first to bring Christian missionaries to join the carantans.

Surname

In the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum his name was given as Cheitumar . It's not clear what the actual name was. In Slovenian it is translated as Hitomir. However, no other bearers of such a name are known.

Life

Cheitumar was the son of a Slavic leader whose name has not been recorded. His brother was Borouth , the first traditional lord of the Carantans.

In his youth he was forcibly brought to Salzburg and brought up there as a Christian under Bishop Virgilius . In 752 he became prince of the Carantans after the death of his cousin Cacatius. In 757, at the request of Cheitumar , Bishop Modestus came to missionary work among the Carantans. The priest Maioranus was mentioned as a spiritual confidante (confessor?) Of Cheitumar. In 767 Modestus consecrated a St. Mary's Church near Karnburg . Cheitumar died in 769. His successor was Valhun

After his death Valhun tried in vain to succeed him as prince. It was not until 772, with Bavarian help, that he succeeded in asserting himself against resistance among the non-Christian carantans.
