The Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum ( conversion of the Bavarians and Carantans ) is a Latin text about the missionary activities of the Archdiocese of Salzburg in the Bavarian and Carantan region since the 7th century. It was created around 870 in Salzburg, probably on the initiative of Archbishop Adalwin . Their aim was to prove the archbishopric's claims for missionary work in the Balaton Principality . The Conversio is a historically unique text about conditions in Carinthia and the neighboring area of the Avars in the 8th and 9th centuries.

content

The conversation begins with a presentation of the life and work of the holy Archbishop Rupert of Salzburg since the late 7th century in Lorch on the border of the Franconian Empire to the Avars, then in Salzburg. Then the bishops and abbots of the Salzburg bishopric are listed. Finally, the history of the carantans since the 7th century is presented.

Historical background

In 870 Pope Hadrian II. Byzantine clergy Methodios the Archbishop of Sirmium , the Principality of Lower Pannonia and Great Moravia appointed. Opposition to this arose in the Archdiocese of Salzburg, as it saw its own claims to missionary activity and church organization violated in parts of the area. In 870 Methodios was imprisoned by the Bavarian church. The Conversio should now prove in a court case before King Ludwig the Germans that the Archdiocese of Salzburg had claims to missionary activity in Pannonia. The Conversio particularly emphasized the role of Salzburg in the missionary work of Bavaria, Carantania and Pannonia. Although it describes the missionary work of Salzburg in detail, it deliberately forgets that of the Diocese of Passau and changes details in favor of Salzburg.

Methodios was only released again in 873 and worked again in Pannonia. In 874, Archbishop Theotmar von Salzburg managed to gain influence in Pannonia. In 880 Methodios fled to Moravia.

Around 970, the so-called Lorcher forgeries arose by the Diocese of Passau with similar intentions .
