Lorcher forgeries

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lorcher forgeries is a name for the change or forgery of some documents and letters for and about the diocese of Passau , which were probably written in the 10th century and are supposed to testify to Passau as the legitimate successor of the ancient archdiocese of Lauriacum (Lorch) .

content

The so-called Lorcher forgeries concern six papal documents, a letter from King Arnulf , two letters from Archbishop Hatto of Mainz to a Pope, and a letter from Bishop Pilgrim of Passau to Pope Benedict VI.

In the letters it was indicated that the Diocese of Passau was the successor to the ancient Diocese of Lauriacum (Lorch), which was destroyed by the Avars in the 8th century . Bishop Vivilo went from Lauriacum to Passau and continued the diocese there. The letters also claim that Bishop Reginar was ordained archbishop in the 9th century and did missionary work in Moravia . The aim of the forgeries was to obtain a privilege in front of the Archdiocese of Salzburg in terms of Christianization and ecclesiastical organization in Hungary and neighboring areas, and to raise them to the rank of archbishopric.

history

Today it is very difficult to reconstruct which parts of the letters were genuine and which were altered or forged. The changes probably took place at the end of the 10th century at the time of Bishop Pilgrim and probably at his instigation.

In the Middle Ages, certificates or other documents were deliberately forged in order to be able to prove certain claims.

The intended aim of the Lorch forgeries was not achieved, the Archdiocese of Salzburg retained sovereignty over the church organization in the east.

In the 13th century, Albert Behaim , canon in Passau, expanded the forgeries again.
