Wiho I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wiho I. (also Wicho I.) (* 772 in Friesland ; † April 20, 804 or 805 in Osnabrück ) was the first bishop of the newly founded Diocese of Osnabrück . After his death, Wiho was canonized.

Wiho was trained at the school in Utrecht . Charlemagne installed him as the first bishop in Osnabrück. Contrary to other sources, the appointment as bishop probably did not take place until 803, although the Diocese of Osnabrück was founded around 780 after Charlemagne made the city of Osnabrück the center of the diocese only around the year 800.

During his term of office, a cathedral school was founded, the predecessor of what later became the Carolinum grammar school , one of the oldest schools in Germany.

The day of remembrance of Wiho is the day of his death, April 20, a non-mandatory day of remembrance in Osnabrück is February 13.
