Longobard campaign of Charlemagne
- March: Pope Hadrian I asks the Frankish king Charlemagne through envoys for help against the Longobards under King Desiderius .
- In late summer Karl begins his Lombard campaign : he crosses the Alps on Mont Cenis , a second army pillar under his uncle Bernhard chooses the route over the Great St. Bernhard . Together they succeed in overcoming the Lombard army at the Klausen von Sankt Michael at the exit of the Susa valley .
- Autumn: Siege of Pavia (773–774) : Charlemagne begins with the siege of the Lombard capital Pavia . Also Verona is besieged.
