Æthelred I. (East Anglia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Æthelred I. (also: Aethelred or Ethelred ) was a king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia in the second half of the 8th century.

Life

No contemporary accounts of Æthelred's life have come down to us. It was not until the 12th century that his name appeared in the English historian William of Malmesbury's in a list of East Anglian kings. According to Richard von Cirencester, a monk and historian of the late 14th century, Æthelred was married to Leofruna (also Leoveromia), a woman from Mercia, with whom he had the son Æthelberht II . Æthelred I presumably succeeded the ruling kings Beorna , Æthelberht I and Hun on the throne around 760 . The royal seat was in Beodricesworth ( Bury St. Edmunds ). Æthelred's year of death is unknown, but is usually set before or around 790.
