Spandau north harbor

The north port of Spandau is a branch canal of the Havel and a former inland port in Berlin . He is in the village hook field of Spandau . The Landesschifffahrtsverordnung Berlin lists the canal as a navigable state waterway . The watercraft must not exceed a length of 67 m and a width of 8.20 m.

The 500 meter long body of water is located opposite the Kleiner Wall Havel island in the section of the Havel, known as Spandauer See , on Maselake Bay. It stretches from the west bank of the Havel to the Hohenzollern Park on Streitstrasse. Only the name and design elements of the new parks remind of the function of the port, which emerged from the fortress moat in 1908/1912. On the south bank there is a historic boathouse from 1911, otherwise the south bank has been almost completely built on since 2011 with terraced houses, town villas and a senior citizen center. A Maselakepark promenade, which was laid out in 2006/2007 and is part of the Havel Cycle Path and the Havel Lake Path (Hauptweg 12 of Berlin's 20 green main paths ), runs along the north bank .

history

The north port was created between 1908 and 1912 at the same time as the south port of Spandau in the north of the Neustadt (Oranienburger Vorstadt). He went to the softening of Spandau , which in 1903 began, from the part of the moat indicates the north of today's road Havel ski jump in front of the bastions was VIII to IX.

The port facilities had sidings to the factories that were built in the north of Spandau in the course of industrialization . Mainly building materials, rolled iron, gas coal, colonial goods, rice, sugar beet and chemicals were handled. The Spandauer Nordhafen quickly lost its importance because it was not up to the competition from the West Harbor in Berlin, which was inaugurated in 1923 . In the decades that followed, the bank areas were primarily used as a storage area for building materials and mineral oils. While the nameplate Bootswerft Nordhafen and numerous ship moorings announced their original abandonment in 2008 , the port and track systems were completely dismantled in 2011 and residential quarters and parks gave way. Only the still existing name Nordhafen Spandau and the design elements of the park are reminiscent of the historical function of the water.

Today's buildings and parks

South bank

In 2011, the south bank was almost entirely built on and only accessible to a limited extent to the public.

Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 use the area and the bank on the corner of the Havel for boating and as a berth for their club ship. According to Edition Luisenstadt , a neighboring boathouse from 1911 with its largely preserved saddle roof and exposed facade is under monument protection , but is not listed in the Berlin State Monument List (status 2011). In the house the boats of the Royal State Gymnastics Institute were originally placed , which goes back to the central institute for gymnastic instruction in the army founded in 1847 . The brick - lined half-timbered house has two main gates, from which the boats were lowered into the water on a floating raft. The construction costs were around 51,000 marks . The draft was drawn up by the Ministry of Public Works under the direction of the Secret Senior Building Councilor Oskar Delius (1846-1916).

City villas, senior center, Hohenzollern Park

After the narrow area of a fishing club, a row house settlement from 2007 and 2008 is attached to the boathouse. Comfortable town villas / townhouses in the Nordhafen district, completed in 2011, continue the development to the west. The Haus Havelblick senior and therapy center has formed the western end of the south bank since 2002. It has more than 600 residential, home and care places, a large garden on the water and its own ship landing stage. The senior citizen center borders on the Hohenzollernpark, which surrounds the narrow west bank of the northern harbor. The park was inaugurated in 2004 and designed by the company HORTEC - garden and landscape planning . Its installation was carried out as part of the urban development measure Wasserstadt am Spandauer See . The park is divided into a representative area at the north port - the “water place” with adjoining meadow area - and the themed playground “ Fischerbucht” . The sunken and stepped water area at the end of the port and the subsequent, likewise sunken lawn up to the Streitstrasse are intended to indicate the further course of the former fortress moat.

The entire north bank of the port is part of the Maselakepark . The public park was created in 2006/2007 and covers 4.3  hectares . It is located on the eponymous former field corridor "Maselake" between the north port, the Maselake Bay, the water town of Spandau and the Maselake Center quarter. Along the port, the park is designed as a promenade with a single-step edge. The conception of the landscape architects specifically takes up the historical elements:

“As a fortified waterfront, a spacious promenade reminds of the historical course of the Spandau fortress moat and the former industrial use of the northern harbor. The natural stone pavement found is being reinstalled, interrupted by large-format concrete slabs that trace the characteristic course of the harbor basin. The port footbridge as a lowered part of the north port promenade close to the water is supported by a wall made of concrete elements. The wall is divided into seating steps in some areas. Integrated stairs lead down to the pier. [...] The end of the line is the Havel balcony, which extends out onto the water like a ship's bow. "

A row of chestnuts at the port was included in the design. Flat meadows line the promenade inland. In the 2009 German Landscape Architecture Prize, the jury honored the Maselakepark. In the laudation, the jury emphasized "the intelligent interplay between a contemporary design language, a high level of user acceptance and the creative interpretation of historical references" .

Concept: Spandau ecological winter harbor

The synthesis report on water tourism conception for the State of Berlin , prepared in 2003 on behalf of the Senate Department for Economics, Labor and Women, recommended the expansion of the northern port of Spandau into an ecological winter port by keeping ice free. Embedded in the development of Berlin into a water town and into a tourism competence center, the ecologically oriented pilot project aims to combine the problem areas of winter berths, antifoulings containing biocides in the hulls, supply and disposal and nature conservation requirements . It is not known whether and to what extent the proposed measures were incorporated into the construction projects and renovations implemented so far (as of 2011).

Integration into the Berlin route network

The paths to the North Harbor Spandau are part of the Havel cycle path , the Queen Luise Route and Havelseen path, footpath 12 of 20 green main roads of Berlin. The trademarked name was created in 2006 as part of the cooperation: 20 green main routes , which consists of a citizen network, the environmental associations Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland and FUSS as well as the Senate Department for Urban Development. The cooperation was developed into a key project in the action program Shaping Berlin for the Future , which was decided by the House of Representatives in June 2006 . Downstream of the Havel on the Lindenuferpromenade, the green corridor connects to the Bullengraben , hiking trail 20 of the 20 green main paths , and upstream at the Wasserstadtbrücke to the long-distance cycle route Berlin – Copenhagen , and also to the Berlin Wall Trail and the Spandauer Forest . Via the Spreewanderweg (main path 1), the Havel cycle path is also connected to the western city of Berlin and the European hiking path E11 via Charlottenburg Palace and the Great Tiergarten . To the south there is a further connection to the Wannseeweg (main route 11) via the Havelhöhenweg through the Grunewald .

While elongated cable-stayed bridges lead the footpath and bike path over the downstream branch canals Aalemann- (since 2010) and Teufelsseekanal (since 1991), the north harbor has to be bypassed or cycled around. On the south side of the harbor, the paths lead through the street Havelschanze , further through the Hohenzollernpark and on the north side over the promenade of the Maselakepark. A way to bridge the north port has been under discussion for years and was already decided in 2007 by the main committee of the Berlin House of Representatives , but was not implemented (as of 2011).
