György Marik (born April 4, 1924 in Budapest  , † December 20, 1988 in Mexico ), known in Mexico as Jorge Marik, was a Hungarian football player and coach .

Life

György Marik played in the second half of the 1940s for Vasas Budapest and was twice (1945/46 and 1947/48) runner-up in the Hungarian league with this club . His only two international appearances for the Hungarian national team in 1947 and 1948 fall during this period .

Marik came to Mexico via the Colombian club Independiente Santa Fe and won the Mexican championship with Club León in the 1955/56 season .

Immediately after winning the championship or in the following season, Marik ended his active career and worked as a coach for the next 25 years.

In 1962 he signed a contract with the ambitious second division club Cruz Azul , with whom he won the championship and thus promotion to the Primera División in the 1963/64 season . He stayed with this club until the 1965/66 season and returned briefly in 1976 before he took over the UNAM Pumas in the 1976/77 season and immediately led to their first championship title. Immediately after this triumph he took over the coaching position at Deportivo Toluca , which he exercised up to and including the 1981/82 season for five years.

(Incidentally, it would not be the only case in which a person abroad pretended to be younger than he actually is, provided that the information was actually originally from Marik himself, which is, however, questionable.)
