Comelis Deelder (born December 15, 1853 in Den Helder , † July 26, 1928 in Soest ) was a Dutch Old Catholic clergyman and church historian .

Life

From 1867 Deelder attended the Latin school of the Old Catholic Seminary in Amersfoort . After his final exam, he studied theology at the local seminary and received on 7 November 1877, the priestly ordination . After he was chaplain in Egmond and Amersfoort, he was appointed priest of the parish of St. Gertrudis in Utrecht with effect from August 17, 1884 . He served that ward for forty years until August 31, 1924.

The Utrecht congregation still celebrated their services in the old, hidden Schuilkerk in Mariahoek . In addition to pastoral care in the community, Deelder also looked after the valuable library and the rich archive that were located here. The archive brought him into contact with the state archivist Samuel Muller , and it provided him with the material for his two volumes of contributions to the history of the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands , which he wrote in 1888 and 1892 - according to (good) Jansenist custom - published anonymously. In 1889 he witnessed the establishment of the Utrecht Union of Old Catholic Churches , through which the relationship was established between the Roomsch Katholieke Kerk van de Oud-Bisschoppelijke Cleresie and the Old Catholic Churches in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, after the Vatican Council of 1870 were created. As a result of the Union of Utrecht, the Revue Internationale de Théologie was founded, on which Deelder collaborated.

Act

He was so well known as a preacher that many theology students in the old church attended his fasting meditations.

Deelder developed the plan to leave the old Schuilkerk and build a new church building. On the one hand, this building was intended to symbolize the transformation of the Clerezie (hidden church) into the Old Catholic Church, and on the other hand, it was an attempt to revive the Mariakerk, which was lost during the Reformation and demolished in 1844 . In 1914 the new St. Gertrudis Church was consecrated. Deelder's wish to turn the old church into a museum was only fulfilled in 1928, the year he died.

In addition to his pastoral work, Deelder was a member of the Metropolitan Chapter, archpriest and provisional of the seminary in Amersfoort.
