Dominican monastery of Cammin
The Dominican Monastery was a monastery of the Dominicans in Cammin in Pomerania 1227-1540.
history
The monastery was founded around 1228 by Stoizlaus, son of the late noble Tetizlaus, who assigned the monks a plot of land at the St. Aegidius Church in the medieval town. This was in an undated document from Duke Wartislaw III. approved. The first brothers came from Krakow. In the centuries that followed, the monastery was given donations and foundations by the Pomeranian dukes, the cathedral chapter of Cammin and by citizens.
After the introduction of the Reformation in Pomerania, the monastery was dissolved. In 1539 the last prior Kasper Schulte asked to be allowed to stay in the monastery until the end of his life. In 1540 the holdings were dissolved.
In 2004 and 2012, archaeological excavations uncovered the foundations of the Church of St. Aegidius and the cloister, as well as a cemetery with around 500 burials.
