History; Attractions

Asperen (in 893 already mentioned in a document) and Heukelum allowed to call cities, because both places were in the Middle Ages , the town charter . Traces of this are still visible in the street plan and in the buildings. Between 1816 and 1860 the New Dutch Waterline was built, a ring of forts around the fortress of Holland . Two of them are in the municipality of Lingewaal: one in Vuren, one in Asperen. Both forts can be visited as part of a cycling or walking route. Fort Asperen, which is well worth seeing, also serves as an exhibition or performance space for artists. The community as a whole is suitable as a destination for lovers of typical Dutch farming villages. The bicycle is the most suitable means of transport.
