Urs Küry

Urs Küry (born May 6, 1901 in Lucerne ; † November 3, 1976 in Basel ) was the son of Adolf Küry and, as his successor, was the Christian Catholic bishop of Switzerland from 1955 to 1972 .

Life

Like his father, Urs also attended grammar school in Basel and the University of Bern to study Old Catholic theology. After a year at the Sorbonne (1929 Dr. phil.) Küry was ordained priest in 1924 and then worked as vicar in Basel, 1928 as pastor in Geneva, 1930–1938 as pastor in the Elisabethengemeinde Zurich and 1938–1955 as pastor in Olten.

1955 Küry was to succeed his father Adolf Küry the third bishop of the Old Catholic Church of Switzerland , the episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Utrecht Andreas Rinkel consecrated. In this capacity he was secretary of the International Old Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Union of Utrecht and from 1938 to 1957 secretary of the International Old Catholic Congresses. At the University of Bern, he worked as a professor at the Christian Catholic theological faculty for systematic theology and for pastoral theology . On the international stage he was a co-founder of the International Old Catholic Theological Conferences, which had been meeting since 1950, and in 1948 was a delegate for his church at the founding assembly of the World Council of Churches in Amsterdam. Together with the Archbishop of Utrecht Andreas Rinkel, he promoted the ecumenical orientation of Old Catholicism . In 1972 he resigned from the episcopate.
