Carl Ernst Konrad Burdach (* 29. May 1859 in Königsberg (East Prussia) ; † 18th September 1936 in Berlin ) was a German Germanist and literary scholar .

Live and act

Burdach, the son of a Prussian district judge, was initially taught by his mother. After her death, he received private tuition and went to high school. In 1876 he passed the final examination at the Königsberg Friedrichscollegium and then studied classical philology , philosophy and psychology at the universities of Königsberg , Leipzig and Bonn .

His dissertation "Contributions to the Critique and Explanation of the Poems of Reinmar the Old" (Leipzig 1880, expanded under the title "Reinmar the Old and Walter von der Vogelweide", Leipzig 1880) marked a turning point in German minnesang research , according to Günther Jungbluth in the New German biography . He expanded the previous chronological-biographical approach to include a style and intellectual history. In the following years he deepened his knowledge at the Berlin University and dealt primarily with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . In 1887 he was appointed associate professor for German language and literature, and in 1894 full professor. From 1897 to 1899 he went on study trips to Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Austria, Italy, Sweden and Paris. In 1902 he became head of the newly created research center of the Prussian Academy of Sciences for German Linguistics, which initially dealt with research on the New High German written language.

From 1893 he created the seven-volume compilation “From the Middle Ages to the Reformation”, in which he recorded the results of his extensive research trips; so also for the prose dialogue “ Der Ackermann aus Böhmen ”. Burdach remained active well into old age and published several monographs, including one on Walter von der Vogelweide (1900), a "Study on Goethe's West-Eastern Divan" (1905) and "Reformation, Renaissance, Humanism" (1918, 2nd Edition 1926). His research on the Holy Grail was only published posthumously ("The Grail: Research on its origin and its connection with the Longinus legend", 1938, reprint 1974).

Konrad Burdach died in Berlin in 1936 at the age of 77 and was buried in the Dahlem forest cemetery. The grave has not been preserved.
