Christian Wilhelm Niedner (born August 9, 1797 in Oberwinkel near Waldenburg (Saxony) , † August 13, 1865 in Berlin ) was a German church historian .
Life
Niedner was the son of a Saxon pastor . After attending grammar school, he began to study theology in Leipzig . In 1826 he completed his habilitation at the philosophical faculty before becoming a baccalaureate in theology two years later . After the death of his teacher Heinrich Gottlieb Tzschirner , in 1829 he posthumously published the first volume of his study “The Fall of Heidenthum”. In the same year he became an associate professor, and in 1838 a full professor of theology at Leipzig University. He held lectures mainly on the history of the church and dogma, but also on the “history of modern philosophy since Kant”. Around 1851 he resigned his professorship and moved to Wittenberg . It was not until 1859 that he accepted a call to the Berlin chair for church history.
Niedner belongs to the ranks of the mediation theologians .
plant
In 1846, Niedner published his "History of the Christian Church", which appeared one year after his death in a revised edition with a new title ("Textbook of Christian Church History from the Ancient Times to the Present"). It is about "a bone-dry, informative, comprehensive and skeleton-like concise manual that can be worked with, because one does not have to read through literary cuddles without exact information".
Between 1845 and 1865, Niedner was the editor of the "Journal for Historical Theology"
