Eduard Berend (born December 5, 1883 in Hanover ; died September 23, 1973 in Marbach am Neckar ) was a German literary scholar.

Life

His father, Emil Berend (1846–1920) was a lawyer and notary in Hanover, later a privy councilor, his mother Mathilde was née Jacobsen. His sister Anna was a victim of the Holocaust , as was his brother Franz. His brother Fritz Berend became a musician and was able to escape to England from the persecution of Jews in Germany and Italy.

Eduard Berend attended the Lyceum in Hanover and initially studied chemistry, physics and electrical engineering at the TU Hanover and in Munich, from 1903 German philology in Munich and Berlin and completed his studies in 1907 with a doctorate. The topic of the dissertation was: Jean Paul's Aesthetics . After that he was a private scholar in Munich. In the years 1910–1914 he worked with Julius Petersen on the plan for a historical-critical edition of the works of Jean Paul , which was accepted by the Prussian Academy of Sciences , but could not be realized because of the outbreak of the First World War . Berend took part in the war as a volunteer and was a lieutenant and company commander at the end of the war. After the war he edited the edition of Jean Paul's letters published by Georg Müller . From 1927 to 1938 he was commissioned by the Prussian Academy of Sciences in a work contract with the publication of the historical-critical edition of the works of Jean Paul. As a Jew, Berend was able to be saved from dismissal for a while through the combatant privilege and Julius Petersen's support. From 1935 to 1938, at the Prussian Academy of Sciences, he worked on Heinrich Seidel's bibliography for the revision of Goedekes' outline on the history of German poetry . 1938, however, he was sent to the November pogroms in the detention camp Sachsenhausen spent and discharged from there with instructions to emigrate immediately from Germany. With the help of Heinrich Meyer , he managed to travel to Geneva, where he waited for an opportunity to leave for the USA, which did not arise until the end of the war. In 1946/47 he was asked by the German Academy of Sciences to take over the editing of the other volumes of the historical-critical Jean Paul edition. In 1957 he received an invitation from the German Schiller Society through Bernhard Zeller , which enabled him to return to Germany. From then on he lived in Marbach am Neckar .
