Cevşen

Cevşen denotes an amulet of the Islamic culture or a special prayer. The word comes from Iranian, where it means " chain mail " (more precisely translated "armored war clothing"), which also explains the function of this amulet and prayer.

Cevşen as a traditional prayer in Islamic tradition

In Islamic terminology, however, the term describes a long prayer that is traced back to the Prophet Muhammad - "Jawshan al-Kabir".

The "Jawschan al-Kabir" consists of 100 chapters in which (with a few exceptions) ten names or attributes of God are mentioned. The main aim of these intercessions and invocations is to find redemption from suffering in this life and from the punishment in the hereafter, which can be deduced from the additions at the end of the prayer.

Cevşen as an amulet in culture

The cevşen consists of Qur'anic suras or prayers written on paper , which are wrapped in a water-repellent manner (in silk, nowadays more in plastic) and then covered with a protective cover - this can be simple leather or an elaborately crafted small box made of gold or silver, which then worn around the neck with a ribbon or chain.

The Cevşen in particular shows the mixture of popular belief and Islamic teaching. The interested buyer can purchase Cevşen for every occasion (lack of desire for children, wealth, protection, health).
