Julie Bondeli
Suzanne Julie Bondeli (born January 1, 1732 in Bern , † August 8, 1778 in Neuchâtel ) was a Swiss salonnière in the Age of Enlightenment .
Life
As the daughter of a patrician family in Bern , she spent her youth at the Buchsi-Gut family estate in Köniz . She took an early interest in languages , philosophy , mathematics and science , and one of her first teachers may have been Samuel Henzi . When her historically and literarily educated father Friedrich Bondeli (1705–1761) became bailiff in Burgdorf , she received further lessons there from Johann Rudolf Gruner .
An intellectual group later formed around her in Bern, which included Niklaus Anton Kirchberger , Vincenz Bernhard Tscharner , Johann Rudolf Tschiffeli and Daniel Fellenberg as well as Professors Albrecht Stapfer and Samuel Anton Wilhelmi . In 1759 she hesitantly got engaged to Christoph Martin Wieland , who visited her in Bern and fell head over heels in love with her. Immediately afterwards, however, Wieland quickly fled Bern and returned to his home town of Biberach an der Riss .
As Jean-Jacques Rousseau in 1762 in Neuchatel, Môtiers settled, she went with him in a letter and examined it in 1765 during a stay in Neuchatel twice. Other correspondents were Johann Georg Zimmermann , Sophie von La Roche , Leonhard Usteri (1741–1789), and Johann Kaspar Lavater .
After the death of her mother Julie Berseth in 1767, she spent her last years in Neuchâtel as the companion of her friend Henriette Sandoz, the wife of a general in the Dutch service, and died there after severe suffering.
Bondeli Street in Köniz was named after her in the 20th century.
Goethe about Julie
- In this sense, Leuchsenring's boxes contained many treasures. Julie Bondeli's letters were respected very highly; she was famous as a woman of purpose and merit and as a friend of Rousseau. Anyone who had had any relationship with this extraordinary man enjoyed the glory that emanated from him, and in his name a quiet community was sown far and wide.
