Johann Rudolf Gruner (born September 29, 1680 in Bern , † March 19, 1761 in Burgdorf ) was a Swiss pastor, collector and chronicler.

life and work

After studying theology in Bern, he became pastor in Trachselwald in 1707 and at the Burgdorf church in 1725 , where he rose to dean in 1744 . He taught Julie Bondeli , the daughter of the Bernese bailiff Friedrich Bondeli (1705–1761), who resided at Castle Burgdorf , founded the Burgdorf city library, collected minerals , coins , medals and antiquities himself and compiled historical, topographical and genealogical sources in 386 volumes .

His handwritten estate is in the Bern Burger Library .

In 1729, at Gruner's suggestion, Solennität , a school festival that is still held today, was celebrated for the first time in Burgdorf .

The Swiss naturalist Gottlieb Sigmund Gruner was his son.
