August Corrodi (born February 27, 1826 in Zurich ; † August 15, 1885 in Hottingen ) was a Swiss draftsman and poet .

Life

August Corrodi was the only child of pastor Wilhelm Corrodi (1798–1868) and his wife Henriette nee Rahn. The mother died a year after he was born. His father married Maria Schulthess, whom August raised. Since the rectory was in the complex of the former monastery complex of the Töss monastery , August grew up in the historical buildings.

After graduating from high school , August Corrodi began studying theology in Zurich at the request of his father. For the second semester he moved to Basel, where he enrolled at Ludwig Adam Kelterborn's art school. After another semester of philosophy in Zurich, Corrodi decided on an artistic education and attended the art academy in Munich from 1847 to 1851. At the same time he was in close contact with the literary scene.

After his return to Switzerland, several children's books were created in Winterthur and St. Gallen . In 1850 he copied a few pictures before the monastery complex in Töss was demolished. In 1855 he recorded his memories of the cloister in one of his books.

In 1861 Corrodi was appointed drawing teacher at the higher Winterthur city schools. In 1863 he married Maria Haggenmacher, who died in 1877. His second wife was Louise Gysi from Seuzach . In 1881 he had to give up his teaching post for health reasons. Corrodi spent his last years in Hottingen near Zurich.

His romantic poems in High German were partly set to music by his friend, the Winterthur composer Johann Carl Eschmann .

Three of his works were premiered by the Zurich Dramatic Society .
