history

In 1884 the Bern University Association was founded. In 1895, at the suggestion of Naum Reichesberg, the Bernese Commission for Commonly Understandable University Lectures was formed. In 1900 this commission was dissolved and the "organization of lectures" was continued by the Bern University Association.

On September 28, 1919, at the “Annual Meeting of the Bern University Association in Biel”, the commission for adult education efforts was formed, which “should promote and possibly lead” the adult education movement in the canton of Bern . The commission had 16 members, including Emil Bürgi (president), Karl Jaberg , Otto von Greyerz , Karl Hänny and Georg Küffer (secretary). On November 6, 1919, it was decided to hold the first six evening courses; on November 14th these courses were advertised in the press. In the spring of 1920, the Committee for Adult Education Activities broke away from the Bern University Association and the Bern Adult Education Center began to organize itself independently. On December 16, 1920, the Volkshochschule Bern (VHB) association was founded; the first president was the sculptor Karl Hänny.

Since 1936 the "cooperation between the university and adult education center has been discussed by committees of the" University of Bern and the adult education association. On February 24, 1939, it was decided to “merge the public evening lectures of the University [Bern] and the adult education center at the annual assembly of the adult education association”; Otto Schreyer became president of the adult education center, Karl Hänny honorary president. On March 8, 1940, the "merger statutes at the annual meeting of the Adult Education Association" were finally adopted.

In 1943 the “first adult education centers in the canton of Bern outside the city of Bern” were founded: 1943 in Langenthal and Thun , 1945 in Interlaken , and 1947 in Biel . In 1944 the organizational expansion of the adult education center in Bern began; a half-day secretariat was created. In 1946 the “two working committees A and B were replaced by a single program committee”. In 1953/54, the adult education center in Bern opened the "Adult Education Center" in Munich Wiler Castle . On December 14, 1956, the statutes of the adult education center in Bern were revised: the adult education center was definitely incorporated into the adult education center, and an administrative commission was created for Münchenwiler.

On November 10, 1956, the “Adult Education Centers of Bern, Langenthal, Thun, Interlaken and Biel” were merged to form the “ Association of Adult Education Centers of the Canton of Bern ”. The association encouraged the founding of further adult education centers that were accepted into the association: 1959 in Huttwil , 1960 in Saanenland , 1962 in Bipperamt , Obersimmental and Münsingen , also in Langnau and Lyss (year unknown), 1965 in Schwarzenburg , 1966 in Frutigland , Brienz and Burgdorf , 1976 in / in Spiez- Niederimmental. From 1957 to 1968 Anton Lindgren was president of the Association of Adult Education Centers in Bern ; since 1971 he was the full-time head of the association.

From 1958 onwards, the planned “introduction of advanced courses (“ courses ”)” took place, “with voluntary examinations since 1968”. Since 1969/70 there have been certificate courses , "first for English, then also for other languages and for mathematics". In 1969/70 the "regionalization of adult education work in the Bern area" began; President Ernst Grütter initiated the cooperation between the adult education center in Bern “and the surrounding communities”. In 1971, the statutes of the adult education center in Bern were revised again: a full-time director (Anton Lindgren) and his full-time assistant ( Hans Sawerschel ) took over management.

In October 1972, the Bern Matura School for working people was founded: the Bern Adult Education Center was “in a working group with the Zurich Academic Community ”. In 1977, the Bern Education Directorate gave the Bern Adult Education Center “the new task of conducting preparatory courses for the entrance exams for entry into the University of Bern ” ( Hanspeter Mattmüller, Anton Lindgren : Bern Adult Education Center 1919–1979. Bern Adult Education Center, 1979. pp. 138– 140.)
