Karl Hänny (born June 13, 1879 in Twann , † April 12, 1972 in Bipschal near Ligerz ) was a Swiss sculptor , painter , medalist and graphic artist.

Life

From 1895 to 1899, Hänny attended the arts and crafts department at the Technikum Biel for four and a half years , where he completed his training as a steel engraver, medalist and chaser. As such, he was in Ulm, Vienna and Munich for two and a half years before he returned to Switzerland and studied in Bern at the School of Applied Arts (now the School of Design in Bern and Biel). In the winter of 1903 he visited Auguste Rodin in Paris . After completing his studies, he worked for a year and a half for the Karlsruhe sculptor Wilhelm Sauer from 1905–1906 , where he independently carried out various architectural sculptures, including at the castle of Count Douglas in Gondelsheim . In 1907 he settled in Bern. From 1903 he took part in important art exhibitions in Switzerland and Germany, for example in Bern, Lausanne, St. Gallen and Zurich, but also in the Berlin Secession and the Black and White Exhibition (Berlin 1903) and in the Munich Glass Palace ( 1909, 1913). In 1917, Hänny organized a collective exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zürich . Hänny was one of the founders of the Bern Adult Education Center , whose first president he was from December 16, 1920. In the 1950s he moved to Ligerz , where he died in 1972.

Hänny was active both as a graphic artist and as a sculptor throughout his life. As a painter he preferred the watercolor technique , but also created oil and tempera paintings and some glass paintings. As a graphic artist, he produced many woodcuts and etchings, both as stand-alone works and as book illustrations, as well as around fifty ex-libri , using lithography and die cuts. Stylistically, his work can be assigned to Art Nouveau and Early Expressionism in these areas .

As a sculptor, Hänny created numerous building decorations in Switzerland, mostly from artificial stone . Examples are the Haus zum Rösslitor in St. Gallen , the administration building of the Bernische Kraftwerke on Viktoriaplatz (Bern) , and the main post office and the Volksbank building in Biel. Most of his architectural sculptures can be found in the Bern area. In addition, Hänny is the creator of a large number of individual works (monuments and statues in stone; busts mostly in bronze) and also of small sculptures (mostly animal figures and a series of nudes ). Most of these works are stylistically assigned to French late romanticism and realistic sculpture.

As a medalist, Hänny created over 400 plaques, mostly portraits.
