Karl Neuhaus

Johann Karl Friedrich Neuhaus , also Charles Neuhaus (born February 9, 1796 in Neuchâtel ; † June 8, 1849 in Biel / Bienne ) was a Swiss politician in the canton of Bern and belonged to the liberal movement.

Originally a businessman and manufacturer, he became a member of the Constitutional Council, Grand Councilor and Government Council in 1831 . As head of the education department, he promoted elementary schools and under his leadership the University of Bern was created. In 1841 he was Bern's representative, President of the Diet and one of the most important liberal politicians in Switzerland. In 1846 he resigned as a councilor and returned to work as an industrialist. From 1848 to 1849 he was a member of the first National Council for a short time . He ran in the first Federal Council elections , but received only a few votes.
