Ernst Moses Marcus (born September 3, 1856 in Kamen , Westphalia ; † October 30, 1928 in Essen , Ruhr ) was a German lawyer and philosopher .

Life

Ernst Marcus was the eldest son of Robert Marcus and Berta Marx. He attended the Archigymnasium in Soest and then studied law at the universities in Bonn (one year) and Berlin. In 1885 he was appointed court assessor. From 1885–90 he worked as an assessor and judge in Kamen, Unna, Hörde, Hagen and Gelsenkirchen. In 1890 he became a magistrate in Essen. From 1889 he dealt with philosophical questions. In 1893 he married Berta Auerbach (born August 15, 1869 in Vreden , † October 28, 1918). The couple had three children; Debora, called Dore , Eva and Robert.

From 1899 he was in contact with the writer and philosopher Salomo Friedlaender , who was born in 1871 and who spent a few weeks each year in the house of the Essen rabbi Salomon Samuel , his brother-in-law. The Essen philosopher was apostrophized and revered by Friedlaender as the "croup of logic", and even "used" as a character in his prose pieces published under "Mynona", namely as "Sucram". In 1916, Ernst Marcus was awarded the title of "Privy Councilor of Justice". The person working as a land registry judge, however, refused a more extensive professional "promotion" in order to keep the necessary freedom for his philosophical writings.
