Hubert Cancik

Hubert Cancik (born December 7, 1937 in Berlin -Karlshorst) is a German classical philologist and historian of religion and, together with Helmuth Schneider, the editor of the New Pauly .

Hubert Cancik studied classical philology, ancient oriental studies and theology at the universities of Berlin , Münster , Manchester and Tübingen . At Ernst Zinn he was graduated in 1964 with studies on the lyrical art of Statius . Cancik became a research assistant at the Tübingen Catholic Theological Faculty in the subject of the Old Testament. In 1969 he completed his habilitation in Classical Philology with an edition of the Fragments of Lucius Accius . From 1974 until his retirement in 2003, Hubert Cancik was Professor of Classical Philology and the History of Ancient Religions at the University of Tübingen. He turned down a call to the FU Berlin (1988). He is married to Hildegard Cancik-Lindemaier ; the couple has two daughters: the ancient orientalist Eva Cancik-Kirschbaum and the lawyer Pascale Cancik . In 2008 the couple received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel . Hubert Cancik is a member of the board of trustees of the Humanist Association Berlin-Brandenburg .
