Frieder Otto Wolf (born February 1, 1943 in Kiel ) is a German philosopher , political scientist , politician and humanist . He has been working as an honorary professor of philosophy at the Free University of Berlin since 2007 .

Life and career

Wolf studied philosophy and political science in Kiel, Paris and Edinburgh from 1962 to 1966. He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Philosophy at Saarland University. In 1967 he received his doctorate at the University of Kiel with the dissertation The New Science by Thomas Hobbes . The work was published as a book in 1969. Wolf completed his habilitation in philosophy in 1973 . He worked as an assistant professor at the Free University of Berlin between 1971 and 1979. Wolf has been teaching philosophy at the Free University of Berlin since 1973.

Between May 1976 and September 1977 he also held an extraordinary professorship in social sciences at the Institute of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra , under the direction of Boaventura de Sousa Santos . Between 1979 and 1984 he worked on labor policy research projects at the Berlin Science Center, at that time together with Frieder Naschold .

From January 2010 to September 2011 he worked as a research assistant for humanistics at the training institute of the Humanist Association.

From 1984 to 1989 and from 1994 to 1999 he was a member of the executive committee of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group in the European Parliament . He has been a party member since 1982, before that he was a member of the SPD from 1961 to 1971 . He is the father of two daughters and lives in Berlin.

Social Commitment

He has been President of the Humanist Academy Berlin-Brandenburg since 2003 and President of the Humanist Academy Germany since 2006 . He was also President of the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD) from January 2010 to September 2017 . He has held various positions at the HVD since 1998, and was also chairman of the coordination council of secular organizations until 2012 .

Since the summer semester 2010 he has also been working in a colloquium for humanism research at the Institute for Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin, together with Hubert Cancik , Richard Faber and Horst Groschopp and continued in collaboration with Hubert Cancik. The dictionary Humanism: Basic Concepts arose from this cooperation, the aim is to gradually develop a humanistic encyclopedia .

Between May 2003 and October 2006 he was also the coordinator of the thematic network Sustainability Strategy at the Free University of Berlin, as part of the 5th Framework Research Program of the EU. Wolf is co-initiator of the Forum Neue Politik der Arbeit , later he became a board member of the forum. He is a Fellow in the Institute for Social Analysis of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and a member of Attac's Scientific Advisory Board . In December 2016, he supported the Berlin State Secretary Andrej Holm in an open letter .

Journalistic activities

From 1978 to 1982 he worked in the editorial department of PROKLA , between 1981 and 1984 as managing editor of the monthly magazine Moderne Zeiten (Hanover). From 1986 to 1993 Wolf was a member of the editorial board of Das Argument . Since 1993 he has also been actively involved in the creation of the historical-critical dictionary of Marxism . He is also a longstanding member of the expanded editorial team of Cosmopolitiques magazine (Paris) and a member of the expanded editorial team of Historical Materialism magazine (London).

In the 1980s, Frieder Otto Wolf was the editor of Louis Althusser's writings . From winter 2010 to probably 2020 he will publish the collected writings of Althusser in partly new translation, compilation and also the first translation into German by Verlag Westfälisches Dampfboot as well as by Suhrkamp and VSA Verlag . The first published in December 2010 was the new edition of the essay Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses and the first translation of Über die Reproduktion , in 2011 the first complete translation of Für Marx was published . Read Capital was published in full for the first time in 2015 .
